Assessment Of Climate Change, Resilient Housing And Sustainable Development Of Coastal Communities Of Bayelsa State


Biography

Clement Ebizimor Deinne bagged his Ph.D degree in Geography from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. A passionate geographer whose area of interest and specialization spans economic geography, sustainable development, health and environmental studies. He has published widely both articles and book chapters in international journal outlets such as Routledge, Taylor and Francis, Geojournal (Springer), Ghana Journal of Geography and other regional and local outlets. His current researches revolve around climate change, resilient housing and sustainable development. The health implications of climate change in coastal communities of Bayelsa State, south-southern Nigeria. He is a senior lecturer at the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability, Niger-Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Nigeria.

Abstract

This study assessed the climate induced challenges of housing in coastal communities of Bayelsa State with a view to advance for climate-resilient housing across four pillars of housing resilience to reduce housing disasters associated with the perennial flooding and its implications on sustainable development in the state. The Sustainable Development Goal 11 focused on resilience housing; sustainable cities and communities to ensure universal access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services, while upgrading slums, reducing economic losses and the number of vulnerable people affected by disasters by 2030. The housing resilient framework provided the theoretical basis for this study. A survey research design involving a stratified sampling technique was utilized. Descriptive statistics revealed 204(52.7%) males respondents, while 183(47.3%) are females, 43(100.0%) of the respondents below 20 years, 61(100.0%) between 21-30 years, 88(100.0%) between 31-40 years, and 100(70.4%) between 41-50 years indicated the need for resilient housing. Result of the analysis of variance revealed that the factors influencing resilience housing and sustainable development are not limited to locations/areas prone to flooding, and eco-friendly construction materials. The result of the step-wise regression analysis revealed that the anthropogenic factors classified as socio-environmental factors of climate change, terrain, housing policy, affordability, and housing conditions significantly influenced resilient housing with regression coefficient r2 values of 90.9%, 94.8%, 95.3%, 95.4% and 95.5% respectively at 0.05 significance level. This study recommends government and non-governmental organizations’ construction of low cost resilient housing schemes, and identification, mapping of flood vulnerable/risk houses, communities and neighborhoods, with greater risks, and for sustainable development of coastal cities.
